Valeksa’s Parent Connection

2:07   |  Teacher: Valeska Bass

Although the ability of families to participate in their child’s learning at school varies widely, it is a KEY RESPONSIBILITY in early learning for educators to provide opportunities for families to understand both the instructional program and their child’s progress. Teaching staff establish and strengthen relationships with families by 1) communicating with them about the instructional program, 2) conferring with them about individual student learning progress, and 3) inviting them to be a part of the educational process itself.

In this student-family learning connection, one of Valeska’s students share how she and the other students in the class communicate learning progress using a technology tool called See Saw (an IPAD-based, video student learning portfolio platform). Take a look at how this first grader captures, narrates and sends her learning progress to her family in “real learning time” in order to provide opportunities for her family to engage in her learning progress (4d: Communicating with Families: Students regularly develop materials to inform their families about the instructional program; Students maintain accurate records about their individual learning progress and frequently share this information with families; ALL Distinguished)
